Orientation to Homeschooling

If you are new or considering homeschooling, this is workshop is a great place to start! Learn the ins and outs of Florida's Homeschool Law and how to make homeschooling a unique and rewarding experience for your family. Lots of practical advice for beginning your journey!

Laziness: There is a Lion Outside

When I first began to research the topic of laziness, I found that there was very little work available and less than a handful of books on the subject. It was then that I found a treasury of information recorded over 4000 years ago, along with a fascinating thesis on this subject written in the 1600s. In this seminar, we will explore the four root causes of laziness, and the time-tested remedies that have changed many a lazy child and demanding parent. A slothful person, according to Solomon, “will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing." But “show me a man diligent in his work and he shall stand before kings!” (Proverbs 22)

Is it a Discipline Issue or a Disability? How “Invisible Disabilities” Can Contribute to Behavior Problems

This talk discusses what can trigger a child to act the way they do. Is there something about the event(s) that just preceded your child’s unacceptable behavior, what about the setting (are they tired, hungry, etc), or have you inadvertently encourage the child’s response because of your chosen method of discipline? Tips and techniques that apply to all children will be offered. Additional insight is given in the case of children with disabilities. Often children with disabilities express themselves with behavior that is perceived to be even more unacceptable or “quirky” than the average child. An overview of a number of “invisible” disabilities, ranging from dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, Sensory Processing Dysfunction to issues on the Autistic Spectrum are presented. Learn some of the “needs” these children have that prompt behavior that may not be acceptable to a parent or society in general. Learn how to evaluate circumstances and your responses to encourage the behavior you desire in your child, and get some insight into the trials of those with children who “walk to the beat of a different drummer”. Come discover a proactive approach to improving your children’s responses to life and help set them up for success.

Building Godly Character in the Home

Have you ever wondered why certain families just “seem” to have it all together? Mom and Dad love each other and have such an easy going demeanor. Their children are well behaved, responsible, and kind. May I suggest that these behaviors do not occur by chance or the “luck of the draw”, but in many cases through a diligent focus on the word of God and the character of Jesus Christ. Come and learn what the scripture teaches about character and how you can become a family that honors the Lord by emphasizing and demonstrating His character. This session will highlight many practical suggestions to help emphasize, require, and recognize good character in the home.

More Like a Family, Less Like a School

Mary explains differences and similarities between homes and schools, such as the roles of principals & teachers versus fathers and mothers; disciplinary set up, and learning environment. She believes that trying to force the traditional school model on a home school can result in putting new wine into old wineskins, which doesn't always work that well!
